Who We Are

We’re two sisters, Mitu, and Maherunesa (we also have another sister, Keya, who was cameragirl on our introductory video), who are both literally and figuratively climbing a mountain to try to alleviate poverty and promote education where it’s really needed. However, we’re doing this in addition to our day jobs! Here’s more about us:

MituMitu, 25, is a PhD student researching video games and human-computer interaction at the University of Portsmouth. She graduated from her MEng in Computer Engineering in 2007, and was a Kauffman Global Scholar in 2008, a prestigous scheme started by PM Gordon Brown to send selected tech & engineering graduates to the US to learn about entrepreneurship. This means she was fortunate enough to spend most of that year at some of the US’ top business schools, and additionally, worked in MIT’s Education Arcade.

She maintains a blog at Mitu.nu (where you can read more about her), and also likes to design video games to make the world a better place. She also dabbles in many other bastions of nerdom, including throwing around dice-with-too-many-sides, and nurturing her nascent interest in graphic novels. She blogs about sad monsters and robots at Total Eclipse of the Reactor Core. She also enjoys travelling and learning new things.

Maherunesa, 20, is currently on a gap year after a brief stint as a biology student at Imperial CollegMaherunesae London. She decided on a change of scene from the laboratory to the courtroom and is now going to be studying Law from this October.  Maherunesa is a little peripatetic to say the least; she previously volunteered with Platform 2 in Ghana for 10 weeks, sparking her interest in human rights and international development. She has numerous gap year adventures up her sleeve – so, in addition to climbing Kilimanjaro, she will be teaching at an orphanage in Costa Rica and generally frolicking around the world.

Maherunesa enjoys drama and has performed in various amateur productions including ‘Poverty Monologues’ at The Edinburgh Festival whilst her love for writing and global issues led her to her current role as a DFID Youth Reporter. Her interests range from the geeky to the cute and fluffy. She particularly enjoys reading about anything to do with brains and genes, and loves learning new languages. However, stick a cat in front of her and she will probably remain just as fascinated.
